DOTHAN: Several projects have already been completed in recent weeks and additional projects will be completed in the next three weeks, Spirit of Service Day will officially take place Saturday, April 29 throughout Houston County.

Starting as early as 7:00 a.m., individual volunteers and volunteers from various organization and civic clubs will be involved in numerous projects, which include landscaping, painting, picking up trash and recycling.

The goal of Spirit of Service is to give everybody in Houston County a chance to volunteer with a project that will help someone in need or participate in a project to beautify our community.  In conjunction with Spirit of Service are Houston County Gives Day and Free Community Recycling Day.  HCGD will be held Friday, April 28 – 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. at Eagle Eye Outfitters.  Thirty-four local nonprofits will share information with the Wiregrass area through an annual exhibition open to the public.  The event is designed to serve as an outreach tool for residents who might be in need of the agencies’ services.

Wiregrass Rehabilitation Center’s Assured Data Destruction in conjunction with Discovery Recycling, and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES), will sponsor a FREE Community Recycling Day for area residents on Saturday, April 29 from 8-11 am at the Houston County Farm Center. Sensitive paper documents (bank statements, medical and tax records, anything with personal information) will be accepted to be shredded. Unused electronics including hard drives, cell phones, copiers, fax machines, and more will be accepted for recycling. There is a charge for CRT’s computer monitors. Clean Up Houston County!!!

Many of the projects are already staffed.  However, Linda Kelley, Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce’s director of community development and Spirit of Service Day coordinator, stressed that volunteers are still needed for Saturday.  The projects needing volunteers are listed on the following page.

To register a project or for more information, contact Linda Kelley at the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce at (334)792-5138.
