Eufaula, Ala. -- The lyrics to the Phil Spector song, “To Know Him is to Love Him,” pretty much sums up how friends, family, and students felt about Charles “Fuzzy” Aplin. He was a meek man with a love for education, especially math, and taught multitudes of students the subject for which he was so passionate. Charles taught for 46 years at the high school and college levels in Florida and returned to his alma mater, Wallace Community College, after retirement. Ironically, he was the second person to graduate from Wallace Community College – Dothan and had the pleasure to come back and teach math on the Sparks Campus.
To honor his legacy, Charles’ wife Julie has established the Dr. Charles O’Neal Aplin Memorial Scholarship through the Wallace Community College Sparks Campus Foundation. This scholarship will benefit a student who aspires to transfer to a university and major in Education.
The scholarship was awarded for the first time during spring semester 2017. Abigail Purcell, a child development student, was the inaugural recipient. She plans to transfer to Troy University and obtain a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. “I passionately love children and to be able to shape their minds and help them grow both physically and mentally would be a huge accomplishment,” said Purcell.
