As Sunday approaches, the Dothan Fire Department urges residents to take the time to change their batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in addition to changing the time on their clocks.

Approximately every three hours, a home fire death occurs somewhere in the nation and 80 percent of those occur in homes without working smoke alarms, according to the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC). “Changing the batteries in alarms and detectors twice a year is one of the most simple ways to ensure notification in the event of a fire in your home”, said Dothan Fire Chief Larry Williams.  Williams continues, “Any resident of the City of Dothan who does not have a working smoke alarm should contact our Hotline.”  The Dothan Fire Department Hotline number is 334-615-FIRE (3473). Dothan Fire Marshal Chris Etheredge adds, “Every home should have a working smoke alarm in the sleeping areas of the home.” Referring to the latest National Fire Prevention Week Campaign, Etheredge says remember, “Hear the Beep, Where you sleep.”

The IAFC is in its 28th year of its “Change Your Clock, Change Your Batteries campaign.” The program urges all Americans to adopt the simple lifesaving habit.

Residents are encouraged to practice the same battery check when the fall time change takes place.
