GENEVA COUNTY: A vacancy was created on the Geneva County Commission recently when a Commissioner resigned. The Commissioner was forced to make a choice between Samson Police Chief and Commissioner. Police chief won.
The Geneva County Republican Party submitted three names to Governor Bentley.
Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver tried to get Governor Bentley to appoint his business partner to the vacant commission seat. In fact when a Governor Bentley visited Rehobeth to pay his respects to the four families who lost loved ones in the tornado, Chairman Culver got the Governor one on one to attempt to persuade him to appoint his business partner.
Late this afternoon Governor Bentley made his decision. Bentley appointed Sandy Hammer of Samson to the commission.
A United States Navy veteran, he has been a successful self-employed General Contractor since 1969 and started his Samson, Alabama based company in the early 1990s. A Master Plumber for over 40 years, he is skilled in every aspect of civil construction, hazardous materials abatement and disposal, commercial repair and remodeling, HVAC and interior electrical systems plus heavy mechanical construction from sewage treatment facilities to large pumping stations.
Mr. Hammer is a civic-minded leader in the community of Samson, Alabama, previously serving as an officer of the Volunteer Fire Fighter Association, and is certified by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission where he received Volunteer Fire Fighter of the Year (two consecutive years). He is currently serving as an AUSA Corporate Member, Wiregrass Economic Development Board Member, Enterprise, AL, Chairman of the Samson Alabama Airport Authority Board, Alabama Wildlife Federation Member, and is a member of the PACT Board of Alabama.
Most of the people I spoke with in Geneva County praised Mr. Hammer on his character and dedication.
Senator Harri Anne Smith and Representative Donnie Chesteen congratulate Hammer and think he will do a fabulous job for Geneva County.
