ABBEVILLE:    The last Abbeville City Council Meeting the new Mayor and some of the council members had to flex their arms to a lady who worked with the City of Abbeville.

In a 4 to 2 vote, the Abbeville City Council terminated the 17 year City Clerk for the City of Abbeville Alabama.

Voting to terminate the 17 year employee:  Mayor Billy Helms, Council Members Brent Murphy, Harold Robinson and Renea Cosby.

Voting AGAINST termination: Council Members Terry Allums and Dorthy Baker.

For many decades in Abbeville Alabama Mr. Jim Giganti served as City Clerk. When he retired Giganti sought election to Mayor. He won and served as Mayor. He did not seek re-election.

The last meeting when these 4 put the boot into the 17 year employee the Council brought Giganti out of retirement. He is now the City Clerk. But only until he gets wise or the Abbeville City Council hire another one.

According to several sources no reason has been given to the lady they canned or the public. And from the sources the people of Abbeville are UPSET.

The Abbeville City Council would not let the 17 year employee get anything the night they ambushed her with the termination. The next day the Abbeville Police Chief and ( I think Mr. Mayor Billy Helms ) escorted her in, watched her retrieve her 17 years of personal belongings and escorted her from the building.

According to the calls I have received, and many calls I have received, what is most disturbing to the citizens of Abbeville...they have to wait four years before they can terminate the Mayor and 3 Council Members.

And while the people love Giganti, they say...he leaves but always seems to come back!
