GENEVA COUNTY:    This morning there was a horrific accident in Geneva County. A very tragic event where one person was dead on the scene, one with severe burns and air lifted directly from the scene to Birmingham.


On dispatch of the call Geneva County 911 "auto launched" Wiregrass Life Flight to the scene. They are the air transport unit which air lifted the burn patient directly to Birmingham from the scene.


According to some sources on the scene it was amazing to watch them work. And to watch them as the Wiregrass Life Flight Crew Sedated and intubated the patient to control his airway that was badly burned and then safely lifted off in the air in transit to Birmingham.


The staff on Wiregrass Life Flight are a "intensive care unit in the air". They are capable and authorized to perform more advanced life saving measures than paramedics. They perform "critical care measures" that are normally only available in the hospital.


The purpose of this article is to make the public aware of the emergency resources we now have available. And this resource has made emergency dispatch protocol change.


When the call comes into the 911 Centers, based on the information given to the 911 Center, as ground units are dispatched to the scene so is Wiregrass Life Flight. When ground units arrive if it is determined the air transport is not needed they are cancelled.


But the days are over in emergency units arriving on the scene, and then, calling for air transport. They are auto launched.


You NEVER initially dispatch off what units find when they arrive, you ALWAYS initially dispatch off the information presented by the caller to the 911 Center.


In other words, do not wait until someone arrives on the scene to confirm the house is on fire to send the fire truck with water. If the caller says the house is on fire, send the fire truck with water immediately.
