A Cullman man with mental health disabilities died Wednesday night after he doused his home with gasoline and set the residence on fire during a standoff with police, authorities said.
Frank Kane, described to be in his 50s, started pouring gasoline inside the home when a family member tried to check on Kane and his elderly mother at their home on Catoma Lane. The family member then called Cullman Police at 2:30 p.m. Chief Kenny Culpepper said Kane barricaded himself in the bedroom. The mother was able to get out of the home.
Culpepper said authorities proceeded to the scene with caution.
"We had to take him into custody when he was armed and threatened officers with weapons," Culpepper said.
