Marianna man Arrested on Multiple Charges

On March 14th, 2017 at approximately 7:43pm, officers with the Marianna Police Department responded to 4094 Edgewood Drive in reference to the violation of an injunction. Upon arrival, officers were advised, Cleitus Smith had violated a court ordered injunction. Smith had made contact with an individual he was prohibited from contacting. After speaking with the complainant, officers made contact with Smith, at his residence. Smith freely admitted to violating the injunction. As officers were attempting to take Smith into custody, he pulled away and fled into the wooded area behind his residence. Officers searched the area, but were unable to locate Smith.
At approximately 10:41pm., officers observed Cleitus Smith inside the Chevron gas station, located at 4153 Lafayette Street. Having knowledge of Smith’s fleeing law enforcement, earlier on this date. Officers approached Smith, and advised him he was being placed under arrest. Smith attempted to flee the store and officers were forced to engage him in a physical altercation. During this time, Smith repeatedly pulled away from and struck a law enforcement officer. Smith also attempted to reach for an officers sidearm, and made verbal threats against law enforcement. As the scuffle spilled into the parking lot, Smith was taken into custody. Smith received minor injuries during his altercation with law enforcement officers. After being medically cleared at Jackson Hospital, Smith was transported to the Jackson County Jail, to await his first appearance.
