DOTHAN: Although damage assessment is still under way, local Red Cross disaster responders continue working to assist those affected by the violent weather that affected east Alabama this weekend. Teams are on the ground in Geneva, Houston and Russell counties to assist those whose homes were damaged and where lives were lost.
"We’ve got teams out doing damage assessment and working with those affected," said Marty Nelson, Disaster Program Manager for the East Alabama office. He added that disaster responders are helping with tarps and tools, as well as providing emotional support to the families involved. Caseworkers are meeting one-on-one with those affected to begin helping to fill immediate disaster-caused needs, create recovery plans, navigate paperwork and locate help from other agencies. The Red Cross will remain on the ground supporting those affected.
Waters may continue to rise through midweek and the Red Cross encourages those in affected areas to be extra careful around flooding and downed debris.
