Hey Everybody,

Over the last few days I have tried to think of a way we, in the Dothan area, could show love and support to the good people of Gatlinburg who have lost so much.  There are a number of organizations that are so good at helping with the necessities.  I am aware of organizations such as the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort, the Red Cross, Disaster Response Team, Salvation Army, and others that fill the needs for food, clothing, bathroom supplies, baby goods, manpower, furniture and other things necessary for daily living after a loss.  Of course, the help and generosity of so many volunteers and good community people in the area up there who donate their time, their energy, and even open their homes is something to be proud of.  The charity that man can show when circumstances are tough makes me proud to be in a position to witness and often participate in the goodness that man, created in the likeness of God, can show towards those who suffer.  But what can we, way down here in south Alabama, do to help?  Then it occurred to me.  CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS!

Can you imagine the warmth and love a Christmas stocking can bring to someone who has lost everything?  I always enjoy receiving my Christmas stockings every year from my family.  Even more so, I can imagine the happiness a simple Christmas stocking would bring to me in the midst of hardships.  The people of Gatlinburg have lost everything. I bet that many purchased Christmas gifts that were destroyed along with the rest of the possessions.  So why not try to bring a little bit of the Christmas joy back to those people?  I think we should!  So I need your help!

Let’s have a “stocking drive”!  Go to your favorite retailer, purchase a stocking (or several) and fill them up with gifts or small essential items.   Please indicate if for a man, woman, boy or girl.  A Christmas card in each stocking would be a nice touch as well.  Men, women, boys, and girls alike would love to see that south Alabama was thinking about them and sending them good wishes during this Christmas season.  I can imagine the looks on their faces!

I have worked on drop locations to try to make this convenient.  So far I have had pretty good response.  I have listed the current locations below.  If we get other drop locations, I will publish those as well.  We are working on it, and if you have any suggestions, please let me know!  The TV news is also willing to share this event, so we are going to get the information to them too.

I will pick up the stockings on Friday the 16th and deliver them on Monday the 19th.  So please, if you want to do this individually, with your church group, with your friends, whatever you choose, let’s show these folks some support and deliver to them a little Christmas cheer.  I’ve never seen a truck load of Christmas stockings.  I’d sure like to drive one north on Monday the 18th!!  If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to email me at the email address below.  I have also added a photo to give you a visual.
