GULF SHORES, AL (WALA) -A vehicle has struck several high school band members marching in the Gulf Shores Mardi Gras parade. A witness said the van, which was involved in the parade, "plowed into" the band members 

The young people who were struck were attended to right away by emergency responders on the street.

FOX10 News has learned 11 members of the Gulf Shores High School Marching Band have been transported to hospitals in Baldwin County and Pensacola, Fla. Three of those 11 band members are in critical condition, according to a city official. 

The city of Gulf Shores canceled the Mardi Gras parade after the incident.

Twelve Students Injured in Gulf Shores Mardi Gras Parade Gulf Shores, Ala – February 28, 2017 – At approximately 10:05 a.m. twelve members of the Gulf Shores High School Band were injured when a 2008 Ford Expedition, participating in the Gulf Shores Mardi Gras Parade, accelerated and struck them from behind. Three of the injured students are reported in critical but stable condition.

The SUV was driven by a 73 year old man who is cooperating with authorities. There is no indication the incident involved alcohol or drugs, nor is it believed to be an intentional act. Gulf Shores Fire Rescue, Gulf Shores Police Department and numerous other agencies responded immediately. The Gulf Shores Police Department is continuing to investigate the incident. Alabama Highway 59 will re-open to traffic shortly.

Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft was deeply saddened by the news of this event and stated, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the children, families and all those involved.”
