A 9-1-1 call in reference to a distressed swimmer had a tragic ending today when the man's body was discovered in the Gulf of Mexico during a search.
The call came in around 11:34 this morning from a location near the Crab Trap restaurant on Scenic Highway 98. Someone had spotted a man struggling in the water a good distance from shore.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office, fire department first responders, the Walton SO, Coast Guard and others assisted in searching for the individual. He was located approximately 40 minutes later. The man's identity will be withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The victim of a New Year’s Day drowning in the Gulf of Mexico off Destin has been identified as a 27-year old construction worker from Houston Texas, via Hidalgo Mexico, who was in the area vacationing with a group of friends and co-workers.
The Destin Fire Department found the man’s body floating face down near Sea Oats Condominiums. He had last been seen struggling about 200 yards offshore in rough seas near the Crab Trap restaurant off Scenic Highway 98 about forty minutes earlier.
