DOTHAN: The Wiregrass Museum of Art (WMA) is pleased to announce it has received a grant in the amount of $5,000 from the Wells Fargo Foundation to support its First Saturday Family Day program.
First Saturday Family Day is one of the longest-running art education programs at WMA, and money from the grant will be dedicated to continue its offerings. Held on the first Saturday of each month, the day includes a free, come-and-go art activity in the museum's studio for children and families from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Activities change each month and expose participants to a wide range of mediums and techniques.
WMA has partnered with several local organizations to provide additional activities some Saturdays, including visits from the Dothan Houston County Library System's bookmobile and the Wiregrass Humane Society. The museum also offers gallery activities for families to explore exhibitions together, allowing children to interact with and interpret the art on display on an age-appropriate level.
The First Saturday Family Day program provides a venue for inter-generational learning and encourages regular museum attendance. With limited resources for arts education in area schools, First Saturday also provides additional opportunities for students to have hands-on experience in the visual arts in a relaxed and fun environment.
Melissa Rea, Development Director of the Wiregrass Museum of Art, commented on the importance of the grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation.
