Troy University to Host Film Series, Teachers? Workshop Focusing on the Civil Rights Movement

DOTHAN—Troy University’s Dothan Campus library will host a series of documentary film screenings and a teachers’ workshop in February exploring the Civil Rights Movement in America.

“Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle” is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities that uses the power of documentary films to encourage community discussion of America’s civil rights history. NEH has partnered with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to develop programmatic and support materials for use at local libraries and other venues.

The Dothan Campus library is one of about 470 institutions across the country awarded a set of films chronicling the history of the Civil Rights Movement. The powerful documentaries include riveting new footage illustrating the history of civil rights in America. In addition to the film screenings, all of the events will feature lectures and discussions led by TROY faculty members. All screenings will start at 7 p.m. in the Sony Hall Auditorium inside Everett Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.

Screenings scheduled for the "Created Equal" series are:

• “The Abolitionists,” with lecture and discussion by Dr. Robert Saunders, on Feb. 4;


• “The Loving Story,” with lecture and discussion by Dr. Bertha Roberts, on Feb.11; and


• “Freedom Riders,” with lecture and discussion by Dr. Martin Olliff, on Feb. 18

In addition to the documentary screenings, TROY will also host a workshop for local K-12 social science teachers on Monday, Feb. 10. Led by Georgette Norman, director of Troy University’s Rosa Parks Museum at the Montgomery Campus, the workshop will give teachers advice on how to present civil rights education and the study of the Civil Rights Movement in their classrooms. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. inside the Harrison Room in Malone Hall.
