TIME IS 10 AM WEDNESDAY
DOTHAN MUNICIPAL COURTROOM
DOTHAN: On Wednesday Dothan Police Department will honor the Police Memorial on Wednesday in the Dothan Municipal Courtroom located in the Dothan Police headquarters.
Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish announced today that retired Jackson County Sheriff John P. McDaniel will be the keynote speaker for the memorial service.
Sheriff McDaniel served more than 25 years as Jackson County Florida ( Marianna ) Sheriff. After McDaniel was elected but before he took office as Sheriff his father was robbed and killed in Jackson County. Working at the Sheffield Gas Station on Highway 231 South just south of the Alabama - Florida line a serial killer took Sheriff McDaniel's dad's life.
Sheriff McDaniel was a working Sheriff. He served the people of Jackson County with honor and dignity.
At the end of Sheriff McDaniel's term he left the office on a Monday afternoon. He was talking with his wife, Millie McDaniel, on the Nextel beep beep phone. Sheriff McDaniel, if memory serves me correctly, was headed to the post office. Mrs. McDaniel told him someone was in the yard as she was arriving home.
Mrs. McDaniel screamed and the Sheriff could not get her to answer. The Sheriff grabbed his law enforcement radio for officers to get to his house.
The first deputy arrived and was ambushed and killed. Sheriff McDaniel's wife had been shot and killed.
Sheriff McDaniel rolled into his yard as two deputies arrived with him. The Sheriff jumped from his Tahoe running to his wife and the deputy. As he ran the gunman were firing at him.
The two deputies could not see the gunman and were firing rapid gunfire towards where the two gunman were believed to be. Finally the deputies were able to shoot and kill the two gunman.
The weekend prior Sheriff McDaniel had his grandchildren with him. He had locked his weapon in a safety box in the back of the Tahoe. On that Monday Sheriff McDaniel had been in the office and handled administrative duties and meeting with people. Nothing had happen so when his wife yelled and he responded his weapon was still in the safety box in the back of the Tahoe.
Had the two deputies not rolled into the yard when he did, or had his wife not made it home before he did, Sheriff McDaniel would have also been ambushed as was his lovely wife and the dedicated Deputy.
McDaniel is a law enforcement officer. Beginning and ending his tenure as Sheriff with personal tragedy with close family members murdered.
Everyone is invited to attend. The service is designed not to be long. But Sheriff McDaniel is a man of honor.
