HOUSTON COUNTY:   10:37 AM.  This morning a preliminary hearing and bond reduction hearing was held in the Murder case pending against Starlin Knight.

The prosecution was made by District Attorney Doug Valeska. The defense attorney was Matt Lamere.

Knight is charged with murder in the case which happened on Spring Street. The victim died after his vehicle struck a pole and caught fire. However the cause of death is two gunshot wounds to the chest.

Evidence presented today indicate there are no eye witnesses that can identify Knight as the shooter.

The information presented in court was Knight and others got involved in arguements. Knight and his girlfriend had been delivering dope to different locations.

Knight and his girlfriend went to 411 Spring Street. There was evidence the victim, McKinnie, went and got his girlfriends car. The white car kept riding around the block multiple times.

Information was Knight and the victim, Shirah McKinnie, got into a gun battle. Knight told his girlfriend to run "it was about to get real" before the gun shots.

Knight gave a statement to police that he fired shots towards McKinnie nut denied striking him. Knight had a AK-47 where they found some 19 rounds of ammunition. McKinnie was found, deceased, with a bolt action shotgun between his legs when he was found in the car.

The investigating officer told the court the path of the bullets fired into the vehicle of McKinnie were from high to low. The officer testified that 411 Spring Street was in a upper location to where the vehicle was located.

Attorney Lamere said the female with Knight said when she ran she heard multiple gunfire from behind her. She stated that she did not see anyone shooting.

The court was made aware that both the defendant and victim had a criminal history.

District Attorney Doug Valeska pointed out that Knight was delivering dope that day. Lamere said they never denied it. But Lamere maintains that Knight was protecting himself and his girlfriend. Lamere contends that McKinnie was the aggressor, came to the house where Knight was, stalked him and shot at him. That Knight was protecting himself and his girlfriend at their residence on Spring Street.

Lamere was seeking the cases to be dismissed in that probable cause did not exist because there was no evidence Knight caused the death of McKinnie. Currently the bond on Knight is set at $ 250,000.00. Lamere is asking the bond be reduced to within the bond schedule or not more than $ 150,000.00.

Houston County District Court Judge Benjamin Lewis took the case under advisement.
