DOTHAN: 12:06 AM. Dothan 911 dispatched Dothan Police, Dothan Fire and Pilcher Ambulance to a medical emergency at Fieldcrest Apartments. The call was a 67 year old complaining of chest pains.
The 911 Center has EMD's. That is communications officers that are certified as Emergency Medical Dispatchers.
As the dispatcher is taking the information from the caller they are typing the information into the computer for another dispatcher to get the emergency units rolling to the scene.
The EMD is asking questions in order to determine exactly what is occurring in order to give specific emergency medical directions until emergency units are on the scene.
During this 911 call voice was lost between the caller and the EMD, but the phone line was still open. With the EMD unable to voice communicate, the 911 dispatcher stepped Policevrespond up to emergency because of possible forced entry to gain access to the patient. Also the dispatcher contacted apartment management to get someone headed that way with a master key.
Before forced entry the caller was able to unlock the door for the emergency units to enter. Do not know why contact was lost with the caller.
This week has been telecommunicators week. A time to thank the men and women who operate police-fire-EMS communications centers. They do a great job in a highly stressful job.
