The John Hutto Park in Newton, Dale County, will be the site of a two-day event commemorating an 1865 battle in the town between the Home Guard and a company of Federal cavalry. Soldiers in period uniforms will come from all over Alabama, Georgia, and Florida to participate in exciting re-enactments of the battle, accompanied by the roar of up to five cannon.

There is no charge for admission to the park, or for participating in any of the planned activities. There will be old-fashioned games, crafts and story times for children, along with adult activities such as tug-o-war and a checkers tournament.  Chances to fire one of the cannon will be available.

Spectators can take a walk through history to visit authentic Union and Confederate camps and exhibits, and after the battles, watch dramatic demonstrations of both Confederate and Union field hospitals in action.

There will be music throughout the day, including a free concert Saturday morning by world-renowned singer Bobby Horton of Birmingham.

Vendors will have food and drink available, along with a variety of merchandise from hand-made knives to period clothing and leather goods.

The gates open at 9:00 am both days.  For directions and more information, visit our website at www.battleofnewton.org.
