Special needs students from Houston County and Dothan City Schools enjoyed a field trip at Joe Phillips' farm in Gordon.
The day of activities is called "Fishing with Angels", and the students enjoy a day of sunshine and casting lines into a pond filled with fish.
Volunteers from the surrounding schools come out to offer a helping hand and make this event a success.
"Our Junior Civitan comes out and helps with our special needs classes. We take them fishing, have hamburgers and hot dogs, and have a bunch of fun," says Ashford High School Senior and President of the Jr. Civitan Club, Stewart Vann. "We will just bait the hook, throw it in there, help them reel it in, and take the fish off the hook."
Joe Phillips started the event after the passing of his special needs grand-daughter, Tiffany. It has since become an annual happening, and is one of three field trips the special needs students take each school year.
