Tri-State Plant Food will close its doors soon costing about forty people their jobs. General Manager William Harrison would only say the plant was open Friday but Chamber of Commerce President Matt Parker confirmed the closure. Parker said he would have liked to see the plant remain open and preserve the jobs but admitted that won't happen. Parker said he did not know when the industry would shut down but employees say the doors will close next week.
A manufacturer of fertilizer products, Tri-State has been in business for decades. The facility stirred controversy at times with occasional ammonia leaks, some of which forced people from their homes. Well over a thousand residents were evacuated in 2000 because of a leak and a nearby elementary school was evacuated last year after fire broke out at the plant.
The plant is located on Dothan's east side on Burdeshaw Street less than a mile north of Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
