HOUSTON COUNTY:   5:22 PM   Former Alabama State Representative Joe Carothers passed away a few minutes ago.


Joe Carothers served Houston County in the Alabama Legislature for 30 years. Carothers was first elected in 1974 and served through 2006.


Joe Carothers was a people person. He was a man who was a mover and shaker in the Alabama Legislature for decades. He was a powerful voice for the wiregrass.


Carothers also had a 30 year career as an Agriculture teacher in the Houston County Schools. He taught and had a significant impact on young people at both Cottonwood High School and Ashford High School. Carothers brought many rewarding moments to many youths as he touched and changed lives.


For more than 40 years, Joe Carothers was involved with the National Peanut Festival. Through his involvement, Carothers touched many lives in the area of Agriculture and cattle. It was Joe Carothers that initiated the National Peanut Festival Junior Beef Cattle Show for youth exhibitors.


Carothers was a member and past president of the Tri State Beef Expo Board of Directors. He also was chairman of the Houston County Steer Show and supported the Houston County Heifer Show.


In 2009 Joe Carothers served as Grand Marshall of the National Peanut Festival Parade.


One thing there was no doubt in anyone's mind about Joe Carothers - WAR EAGLE!!!


A graduate of Auburn University in 1959, Joe Carothers loved him some Auburn football.


Joe Carothers served two terms in the military. He was married to the late Barbara Burns Carothers. Together they had two sons, Robbins and Merritt, and they had three grand children.
