HOUSTON COUNTY: The docket for 72 hour hearings to be held in Houston County District Court before Houston County District Court Judge Benjamin Lewis.
Persons arrested and in the Houston County Jail are required to go before the District Judge within 72 hours of arrest. At this appearance Judge Lewis makes sure the defendant is aware of what they are charged with, the penalty for the crime, some basic rights, do they have an attorney, do they plan to hire an attorney. If they do not plan to hire an attorney, Judge Lewis will make a determination if they qualify for a contract appointed attorney.

TOP 1 - represents Theft of Property in the first degree
The hearings are held via closed circuit TV. The persons in custody are in the Houston County Jail and appear in District Court by ways of a closed circuit TV which is in the courtroom. The Judge can see and hear those in jail while those in jail can see and hear the Judge.
Judge Lewis holds the 72 hour hearings Monday through Friday at 8:30 AM. On holidays he or another Judge usually conducts the hearings at the jail in person.
