Dothan/Houston County Emergency Management Agency is maintaining contact with personnel at the National Weather Service in Tallahassee and is closely monitoring river levels in Columbia and Gordon.   Based on information provided by the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service, flood stage levels have already been reached at the Chattahoochee River.   Due to extensive rainfall in the basin, particularly north of Houston County, there is an anticipation of more water being released from Walter F. George Dam.

The last reported Chattahoochee River level reading at 7pm CST was 107.22 feet.  It is expected to reach 112 feet by midnight tonight, and could crest at as much as 117 feet by Friday morning (December 25).

What this means for residents near the river at Columbia and Gordon is as follows:

Columbia:    Minor lowland flooding in the areas near the river is already occurring.  As flood waters continue to rise, flood water will deny access to houses on the bluff below the Columbia Bridge near Gilbert Drive.  Several river access roads may flood,  and potentially residences.

Gordon:  Water will begin to flood primary road access to homes in Gordon, and potentially residences.    As flood waters rise, water will reach the top of the lock walls and the Columbia Lock and Dam will be evacuated.  There could be significant erosion along the river banks.  In 1978, this resulted in caving in of the banks with some damage to walls and outbuildings.

Emergency workers and law enforcement officials continue to closely monitor the river levels in the affected areas. Please stay off roadways in the affected areas and allow emergency workers to do their jobs.

ALL BOAT LANDING ARE CLOSED.

WE ENCOURAGE RESIDENTS TO EVACUATE AREAS THAT ARE PRONE TO AND HAVE SHOWN A HSTORY OF FLOODING.

BARRICADES HAVE BEEN PLACED IN CERTAIN AREAS NEAR THE RIVER FOR SAFETY PURPOSES---DO NOT GO AROUND OR MOVE A BARRICADE. IT IS A VIOLATION OF ALABAMA LAW.

If you have an emergency, dial 911.  For non-emergencies, contact the Houston County Sheriff’s Office at (334) 677-4808.  For flood related questions or information, contact the EMA office at (334) 794-9720.
