HOUSTON COUNTY: Today is the birthday of Mr. Quency McClendon of Ashford. I wanted to wish Mr. Quency a very special Happy Birthday.
Mr. Quency is married to Sandra McClendon. They have three children; Wendy, Mitzi and Amber. Over the years all three of their daughters were very active in school, church and sports. The daughters always knew during the years, whatever events they were involved in, mom and dad were there.
It was sometime in the 80’s that I became briefly acquainted with the McClendon’s and Memphis Baptist Church. It was during my tenure as Coroner in the death of Mrs. Sandra’s sister. It was obvious to me the love of the church and the family as I dealt with them under sad circumstances.
It was some years later I started dating my wife Marsha and left my home church of Southside Baptist and joined Memphis Baptist Church. It was at that time I started to know Quency and Sandra McLendon and their family.
Since 1988, I have seen the three McLendon daughters as they dated and married. Wendy being the oldest married Stephen Jones. Mitzi married David Hasty and Amber married Ken Brown.
Normally in families, as children marry and begin their lives, they separate in activities. This has not happened in the Quency and Sandra McLendon lives. All three daughters, all three sons in laws, have remained together and active in church. I cannot remember a time that any of the children and spouse departed from Memphis except for maybe college school days. They were and have been always an “active” part of Memphis Baptist Church.
As each of the children started with their own families, their families were in church. Their families were active in church.
Today, if you are at Memphis Baptist Church and do not see all or part of the McLendon – Jones – Hasty – Brown family in church, which means Sunday School, Worship, Sunday morning/Sunday night, Wednesday, choir, piano, solo, teaching class, Upward programs, then something is wrong.
In addition, all three sons in laws, Stephen Jones, David Hasty and Ken Brown, along with Mr. Quency, are or have served as active deacons in Memphis Baptist Church.
Quency and Sandra started with three daughters. The family has grown to three sons in laws. The family has now grown to:
Wendy and Stephen having four children: Landon, Tyler, Caleb and Sophie.
Mitzi and David to having two children: Dylan and Morgan
Amber and Ken to having one child: Madison.
And guess what you see? All of them active at Memphis Baptist Church.
Besides wishing Mr. Quency a Happy Birthday, this is a spotlight on a couple, Quency and Sandra, who married 45 years ago in September. A couple that placed their faith in Jesus Christ, and raised three wonderful daughters. Three daughters who were well respected in their school, community and sports. Who, through the wisdom passed along from their parents, and the love through their parents, made the “right” selection in their mates.
You will not find three finer young men then Stephen, David and Ken.
And as their families grew, each of the couples followed and have raised their children under GODLY standards, remaining faithful and steadfast to what their parents taught them.
PLEASE NOTE: All three sons in laws, your parents are commended also. In no way is all of the credit to Quency and Sandra because for these three girls to have found fine men like each of you, it started in your homes also.
For 44 years Quency McLendon has worked at the paper mill in Cedar Springs. He works on the # 1 paper machine. For many years he has worked split shifts. He graduated from Rehobeth High School. He enjoys his time gardening, fishing, working on his new pond, bicycling and spending time with family and grandkids.
Quency is also the granddaddy to Morgan Hasty. It is and has been the years that he and Sandra taught their daughter Mitzi the love of Christ, the years their love with David, and the years the Hasty family has spent with David and Mitzi, that has allowed their faith and endurance to be as strong as faced with one of the largest faith testers of their lives. And in my opinion, Morgan has faced this battle with such courage, because of the examples set before her by her family.
Mr. Quency, from the people of Memphis Baptist Church, the people you have had a direct and indirect influence on over the some 24 years I have watched at a distance, HAPPY BIRTHDAY and thank you for the example you have set for all. You are a quiet person, but one of the most respected in the church.
