BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
The Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed the first travel-related case of Zika virus in the state.
A Morgan County resident tested positive for the virus.
"We knew it was only a matter of time before we would have the first positive case of an individual in Alabama with Zika virus," Acting State Health Officer Dr. Tom Miller said in a press release.
"Given the frequency of international travel to affected areas, we anticipate having additional positive cases. We are working with the medical community to identify high-risk individuals," Miller said.
Testing is being conducted on four samples from other residents who have travelled to areas affected by the virus. One tested negative.
The virus is primarily transferred through bites from the Aedes species of mosquitoes, but may also be spread through sexual contact and blood transfusions, according to the department.
It can also be spread from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy.
In most cases, Zika virus causes mild symptoms.
But, the virus can lead to birth defects in pregnant women. The Alabama Department of Health advises all pregnant women with a history of travel to affected areas to be evaluated.
