Montgomery, AL The Alabama agriculture and forestry community is coming together to feed the hungry by sponsoring a food drive during the 2015 inauguration.

“Agriculture is Alabama’s No. 1 industry, generating $70.4 billion in economic impact and providing almost 600,000 jobs,” said Alabama Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries John McMillan. “Unfortunately, some Alabamians don’t get to experience that bounty as often as they should. We’re happy to partner with the Montgomery Area Food Bank (MAFB) to help reduce hunger in our state.”

Non-perishable food and monetary donations will be collected outside the RSA Alabama Activity Center at 201 Dexter Ave., 7:30 a.m. until noon Monday, Jan. 19. The public is invited to join the agriculture groups by dropping off donations.

The food drive is sponsored by Alabama Ag Credit, Alabama Agribusiness Council, Alabama Cattleman’s Association, Alabama Farm Credit, Alabama Farmers Cooperative, Alabama Farmers Federation, Alabama Forestry Association, Alabama Grocers Association, Alabama Nursery and Landscape Association, Alabama Poultry and Egg Association, First South Farm Credit and the Department of Agriculture and Industries.

In the area MAFB serves, poverty affects one out of five individuals and one out of three children. MAFB provides 20 million pounds of food to more than 330,000 people in 35 Alabama counties annually.
