Alabama Alcohol Sales Ruling Could be 'fFnancially Devastating' for Small Towns

Friday's Alabama Supreme Court ruling striking down a 2009 law that allowed more than 30 dry cities and towns across the state to conduct referendums on whether to allow alcohol sales could have major negative consequences for their economies, according to advocates and municipal officials.
"The people in those communities have voted to allow alcohol sales in those communities and they've got businesses that rely on those sales," Lori Lein, general counsel for the Alabama League of Municipalities, said. "It could be financially devastating to those 30 or so municipalities that have relied on that act and moved forward ... The biggest impact is going to be if they all have to shut down immediately, you've got municipalities with revenue streams that are going to suddenly be shut off."
