DOTHAN, AL- Barbecue teams in Alabama have another great reason to participate in the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) sanctioned event PorktoberQue this fall. For the first time in the event’s history, PorktoberQue will also be a stop on the highly competitive Alabama BBQ Trail, supervised by the Alabama Barbecue Association (ABA).
The ABA was formed in 2006 to oversee the prestigious Alabama Governor’s Cup, which is awarded to the professional barbecue team with the highest overall points in their top five contests on the Alabama Barbecue Trail. The Trail consists of sanctioned contests throughout the state who have met certain eligibility requirements and are of the highest caliber. Because the Governor’s Cup only counts the scores from a team’s top five contests, it gives teams who do not compete very often a fair chance at the Cup against teams who might compete every weekend.
PorktoberQue features over $5,000.00 in prize money to competitors, and also gives the Grand Champion a free entry into the 2014 World Series Of BBQ at the American Royal in Kansas City, MO. Additionally, the winner will have their name placed on a “bung” in Lynchburg Tennessee. The bungs from Alabama contest winners are placed into the state entry pool for the Jack Daniels Invitational Barbecue to see who will represent the state at “the Jack” in 2014.
PorktoberQue is an Oktoberfest themed barbecue competition the last weekend of September in Dothan, Alabama. Besides the barbecue competition, spectators are treated to polka music, Bavarian foods, Oktoberfest beers, as well as a car show, kids area, and other family entertainment. Barbecue teams who are interested in competing should visit www.PorktoberQue.com for an application, rules, and a map showing the competition spaces available currently.
