Alabama debt totals $60.57 billion, report finds

Dothan's housing affordability index rises 16% from last year.


The third annual report by the non-partisan research and advocacy group State Budget Solutions analyzes debt including debt from unfunded pension commitments, outstanding bonds and fiscal 2013 budget gaps.

The state with the largest by far was California, which had a state debt of $617.62 billion, was followed by New York's $300-billion debt. Other states with the largest debt included Texas ($287 billion), New Jersey ($282.4 billion) and Illinois ($271.1 billion). States with the smallest debt were Vermont ($5.8 billion), North Dakota ($6.1 billion), South Dakota ($6.5 billion), Nebraska ($7.8 billion) and Wyoming ($6.9 billion).
