The largest teacher organization in Alabama is now calling for a complete ban on corporal punishment in public schools.
The 650 members of the Delegate Assembly of the Alabama Education Association on Friday unanimously approved resolution 16-77, which states states, "AEA recommends all public schools ban corporal punishment."
There was no discussion and no objection prior to the vote, President Sheila Remington said. Members include teachers, administrators and school support personnel.
More than half of Alabama's schools paddled students during the 2013-2014 school year, according to federal civil rights data. AL.com's analysis in September found nearly 19,000 students were paddled.
Most states no longer paddle. Alabama saw the third highest rate of paddling in 2013-2014, behind only Mississippi and Arkansas. 29 states ban corporal punishment in schools.
Research has shown paddling students at school has a negative impact on students and on school culture.
NOTE: Ask the older generation if a coach putting a board on your buttocks "had a negative impact on students and on school culture". Or, did it have a positive impact on your learning ability and attention deficient disorder.
