Alabama’s jobless rate rose to 8.5 percent in August, the fourth straight month of increases.
The state was in lockstep with the national unemployment rate in July, at 8.3 percent, but the national rate fell .2 percent to a seasonally adjusted 8.1 percent in August while the state’s rate rose by the same percentage.
More than 15,000 new job seekers entered the state workforce in June and July, about 1,000 of whom joined the state’s workforce in August. Overall, about 3,000 fewer Alabamians were employed in August statewide.
