Montgomery: The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Bomb Squad provides an invaluable resource to county and municipal law enforcement agencies throughout the state, responding to 59% of all calls according to the U.S. Bomb Data Center.

“From suspicious packages to canine searches to disarming bombs that threaten hundreds of citizens, the ALEA Bomb Squad uses their specialized skillsets to help keep the citizens of Alabama safe,” said Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier.  “Almost daily, we receive requests from county and municipal law enforcement agencies for assistance.  Unfortunately, funding for this unit would be eliminated by the Legislature’s proposed General Fund Budget.”

ALEA’s Bomb Squad is a highly trained team that has received and responded to 124 calls for assistance during 2015.  Recently, two members of the bomb squad diagnosed seven and subsequently disarmed three, improvised explosive devices under the extremely volatile conditions of an active methamphetamine laboratory, in less than six hours.  Not only did they save the lives of hundreds of nearby citizens but they saved the lives of fellow law enforcements officers.

“ATF, and our National Center for Explosives Training and Research (NCETR) at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, is proud of our longtime partnership with the ALEA bomb squad and its city and county colleagues.  The training and information sharing that goes on at NCETR is an excellent example of federal, state and local authorities working together to address threats to public safety,” said ATF Special Agent in Charge Don Robinson.
