MONTGOMERY – The 61 Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Forces across the nation -- including the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) ICAC Task Force -- in April launched a two-month joint effort called Operation Broken Heart II, resulting in the arrest of nine child predators in Alabama and the seizure of numerous digital devices containing child pornography.

A coordinated effort by law enforcement representing more than 3,000 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, Operation Broken Heart II was designed to arrest as many child predators as possible and to promote Internet safety education and outreach. Nationwide, there were 1,140 arrests, 1,831 search warrants served and 240 public events. In Alabama, three federal search warrants and nine state search warrants were served.

“ALEA’s ICAC Task Force set out to locate and arrest predators who use digital media and devices to prey on children,” Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier said.  “Operation Broken Heart II is a true testament to the efforts of law enforcement to protect our children, and it should serve as a warning to other individuals who may be involved in such crimes.”

Members of ICAC Task Force concentrated on offenders who possess, manufacturer and distribute child pornography; engage in online enticement of children for sexual purposes; engage in the commercial sexual exploitation of children (commonly referred to as child prostitution); and engage in child sex tourism (traveling abroad for the purpose of sexually abusing foreign children). Task Force members also focused on Internet safety education. Nationally, there were 2,219 presentations made and 240 public events.  In Alabama, 14 presentations were made with over 2,500 attendees and two public events reaching approximately 400 people.
