The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) consistently explores ways to maximize resources while ensuring efficiency. ALEA’s Protective Services Division is doing just that by reviving its Bike Unit for routine patrol and special events in Alabama’s Capitol Complex.
“Assigning Troopers to bike patrol not only reduces Protective Services’ fuel costs, but it allows the Troopers who are assigned to Capitol Complex patrol an opportunity to work more closely with the thousands of individuals who work or visit the cluster of state buildings in downtown Montgomery,” Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier said.
To qualify for the unit, Troopers must exceed physical fitness standards and complete a certified Bike-Police Officer course. Currently, 10 Troopers are assigned to bike patrol.
The program originated in May 2005 with two officers, whose duties included patrolling the Capitol during various rallies, parades and other gatherings.
