Arrest In Dale County For Robbery of Diamond Quality Convenience Store

  JULY 12, 2012

  

On 07/10/2012 E911 received a call in reference to a robbery in progress. The caller stated that a masked man entered the Diamond Quality Convenience Store on Highway 231 in Newton, Alabama and stole an undetermined amount of cash from the register.

 The suspect was caught on video surveillance entering the store and taking undisclosed amount money. The cashier and other witnesses on scene watched the masked man open the register and take an undetermined amount of cash. Witnesses then say the suspect fled the scene at the rear of the store. The suspect was last seen running towards the trailer park in the rear of the residence. Authorities were able to get some leads from local residents and some physical evidence collected from the scene.

On 07/11/2012 Investigators identified the suspect to be white male Michael Ethan Smith (22 years of age) from Ozark, Alabama. Mr. Smith also had an Active Warrant from the Alabama Pardons and Parole Board for a Violation Charge.

On 07/11/2012 authorities located Mr. Smith and took him into custody without incident. Mr. Smith did have a large amount of cash on his person at the time of arrest.

The town of Newton and Chief Beistline would like to thank all law enforcement personnel for their assistance with this event. Chief Beistline also wanted to thank all the concerned citizens who assisted authorities in this investigation.
