Author, historian Dale Cox to speak at Troy University

DOTHAN—Author and historian Dale Cox will discuss his latest book, “Milly Francis: The Life and Times of the Creek Pocahontas,” at Troy University’s Dothan Campus on Sunday, Oct. 19.

The event will be held in the Harrison Room in Malone Hall starting at 3 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Cox, the author of thirteen books on U.S. history, lives near the historic community of Two Egg, Fla. He has written extensively about Southeastern U.S. history from the era of Spanish exploration to the troubled times of the 1930s. His books have achieved critical acclaim and rank among the best-selling nonfiction books on history.  He is currently featured by Troy University Public Radio in an ongoing interview series on the history of Northwest Florida.

His latest work is the story of Milly Francis, a young Creek Indian woman born in Alabama around 1803 who lived through three wars, including the First Creek War that destroyed her father’s religious movement.  During the Seminole War of 1817-1818, Francis saved the life of American soldier Duncan McCrimmon, an act that led Congress to present her with a special medal of honor. Though her actions altered how the American nation thought about Native Americans, it did not save her from a long and tragic journey on the “Trail of Tears.”
