BBQ or Hooch In Front of Dothan High School

DOTHAN:     There is an application for a package store license at 1147 South Oates Street. The item was on the Dothan Commission Agenda for the approval of the package store at this location. It was removed from the agenda because the applicant put the wrong address on the application.

The correct address is 1127 South Oates Street. The applicant will have to re-submit application for 1127 South Oates Street.

This application is at a business where the City of Dothan Planning and Zoning ( Todd McDonald's Office ) refused to issue a business license. The refusal was to Pig Out BBQ that was located at 1127 South Oates. A building that had been the home of well known restaurants over several decades, Mecca Grill and JoAnn's Restaurant. Several decades before McDonald was moved from Shelby County to Dothan Alabama to handle Planning and Zoning for the City of Dothan.

But Pig Out BBQ was forced to close because they had a "mobile" BBQ pit in front of the business. It was the position of McDonald ( City of Dothan ) that the BBQ pit was "part of the structure".

When Dothan forced the restaurant to close, 5 jobs were lost. The Commissioner for the district was urged to contact Pig Out BBQ to remain open. Although they only had 5 jobs it would matter if your job was one of the 5 being lost.

The commissioners never went by there. One commissioner was beat and the other is up for reelection this year.

Now, 2017, the application for a package store exists in the Pig Out BBQ building which sits directly in front of Dothan High School. This package store ( alcohol sales store ) is directly across the street from a school and two blocks from a church.

No BBQ place. We will see if another application is submitted with this address for the package store.

Which is better? BBQ or hooch in front of the school?

NOTE:  The sign required by the City of Dothan for the application for package store is in the window of 1127 South Oates Street.
