In recent days the news has been full of gloom and doom predictions from Montgomery, we have been told that Alabamians will not have state parks to enjoy, there will be no state troopers on the highways and that law enforcement in general will be cut to the bone unless the legislature moves quickly to pass Governor Bentley's tax increase plan.
State department heads have given the governor's scare tactics credibility by joining in with crying wolf, making public statements, sending out press releases, and in some cases calling on news reporters to help spread the rumors as real news stories.
Friday the lame duck governor went beyond the pale as he instructed staff members of Alabama's Council on Aging to make phone calls to homebound seniors, and the disabled to tell them unless they called their state legislators and urged them to implement the tax increase plan, they would lose their benefits and their medicine.
The fact is that the Senate and the House of Representatives is in the middle of working out the budgets and nothing has been set in stone yet, the truth is that legislators are being kept from working to solve the budget shortfalls because of dodging the rocks being thrown at them by a governor pitching a hissy fit. The administration seems bent and determined to force tax increases on Alabama citizens regardless.
