Dothan, AL – December 9, 2016 – Beverlye Magnet School -  http://www.dothan.k12.al.us/schools/beverlye_magnet_school has been named one of 25 school semifinalists in the 2016 Northrop Grumman Foundation Fab School Labs contest aimed at promoting STEM education.

The public middle school lab makeover contest provides administrators and teachers with an opportunity to make their dreams of a state-of-the-art STEM lab a reality for their students thanks to five available grants of up to $100,000 each to be awarded by the Northrop Grumman Foundation to the contest winners. Beverlye needs the community’s help to secure one of the available grants by casting a vote in the online crowdsourcing contest taking place on December 9, 2016.

Inadequate funds to purchase equipment and an overall lack of facilities are frequently cited problems by teachers and educators as it relates to science and mathematics education at the elementary and middle school level, according to the National Science Board and other education sources. Lack of funding and dated facilities are challenges faced by Beverlye Magnet as well, preventing the staff from adequately teaching, motivating and inspiring its middle-schoolers in the various STEM disciplines. Winning a grant of $100,000 will help Beverlye Magnet transform its STEM lab into a place of imagination and opportunity for students, while also helping them better meet the demands of today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world.

“Beverlye Magnet School is striving for excellence! We are an award winning school. Please help us provide an award winning STEM lab for our students!,” said Maria Johnson, Beverlye Principal.

Video submissions from Beverlye Magnet and other semifinalists will be posted on the Fab School Labs Facebook page located atwww.facebook.com/fabschoollabs where the community and public at large will be asked to vote daily for their favorite and most deserving school between December 5th-9th. Online voting is simple; just click the “like” button next to Beverlye Magnet School’s video submission. Votes received by each school during the online voting campaign will be considered along with other criteria to evaluate and determine the winning grant recipients. Beverlye’s voting day is December 9th. To help you remember, “December 9, Vote Online.”

In addition to their votes, Beverlye Magnet School also seeks the community’s support to help spread the word to their social networks, in the workplace, and neighborhoods to increase the school’s chances for winning. With help from the Dothan Education Foundation, Beverlye will be soliciting support from the community via local media, social media and word of mouth. Posters will also be available to post in their businesses around town. Members of the community can spread the word through making weekly announcements at their organizational meetings as well as at their house of worship.
