John Edward Penn, 63, is an asset to his Community, his State and his Country. He served in the Vietnam War where he was exposed to Agent Orange. After being released from the Army, he began his Public Safety Career as a Conservation Officer with the State of Alabama. After his retirement he continued his service working as a Police Officer in Pinckard, AL. He is a wonderful father of three, and grandfather as well. In May of 2012 he was struck by a car in a crosswalk in Panama City Beach. He spent weeks in the hospital and even longer time in rehabilitation. Soon after, he began to feel consistently weak. We went to UAB and received John’s diagnosis of AML (Leukemia) on 12/22/13. He was immediately admitted for treatment beginning his 1st series of Chemo on Christmas Eve. From the beginning, Doctors said he would need a Bone Marrow Transplant. With John being adopted we have no contact with his siblings. After searching the Be The Match Registry, no 100% matching donor was found. With his unusual HLA typing we need to add more donors to the Registry in hopes to find a perfect match! His wife, his kids, his family and friends, we all need this man. He is unlike any other. He has too much life left to live.

In honor of John those between the ages of 18 and 44 can join The Be The Match Registry on Saturday, March 29th from 10am to 3pm at LifeSouth on 3833 Ross Clark Circle in Dothan. You must be willing to donate to any patient in need and meet our health guidelines.
Help us find a match for John and all patients in need!
All it takes is a cheek swab to join and you could save a life!

We are also raising funds because it costs Be The Match $100 to add each new donor to the Registry. A donation of any amount can help add more donors to the Registry, provide patient assistance and fund life-saving research. Please click on Make a Gift to donate online today!

If you want to join and are unable to attend on March 29th, you may join online at

If anyone that's interested is short on time they can text MATCH 210 to 50555 to Donate $10 to this event.
