DOTHAN: Mental illness is for real. And it is a frustrating issue for many families in dealing with mental issues.
Tonight, currently, both Southeast Alabama Medical Center and Flowers Hospital are on BMU ( Behavioral Medicine Unit ) diversion. That means, neither hospital in Dothan Alabama has any room available for any patient suffering with a mental illness.
This leaves countless Probate Judges with no where to send patients that require in patient, immediate treatment. That leaves law enforcement, fire and EMS with no Dothan medical provider able to take any patient who needs immediate medical treatment.
Diversion has developed into a daily thing in Dothan Alabama. And the public is not aware of how many times the Dothan hospitals are on complete patient diversion.
When that happens, the emergency service providers ( police - fire - EMS ) are left with major, and I mean major problems and issues.
You can have a patient in full cardiac arrest in front of the hospital that is on diversion, and have to drive miles across town to the other hospital.
But tonight, 34 minutes ago at 10:58 PM, both SAMC and Flowers Hospital can not take any patient requiring behavioral medical treatment.
