Sheriff LeRoy Upshaw announced that the body of a black male from Clio, AL, a small town in southern Barbour County, has been positively identified. Willie David Pugh Jr. was identified through dental records by the Alabama Department Of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery. An autopsy was performed yesterday on the body and confirmed the victim died as a result of foul play.
Willie Pugh has been missing since January 14, 2012 and that foul play was suspected. The victim was located in a wooded area on Sutton Dairy Rd. late Tuesday. Sheriff Upshaw said that the crime scene was processed by several agencies that came together and worked brilliantly with each other to preserve all evidence and documentation of the Sutton Dairy Rd. body dump site. Agencies consisted of the Barbour County Sheriff's Office, the Dale County Sheriff's Office, the Houston County Sheriff's Office, the Dothan Police Department Crime Scene Division, the Barbour County District Attorney's Office Investigations and Barbour County Coroner, Chip Chapman.
Lt. David Morris, lead investigator, said that it was amazing to see and be a part of so many officers, some that he has known for years and some unfamiliar faces, work hand in hand in such a professional manner as to preserve the crime scene and collect all of the on scene evidence to strengthen the homicide case and help to identify the victim.
Sheriff Upshaw said that the suspect's residence located on Hwy 51 S. was intentionally set on fire last night and that the investigators and crime scene personal were called back out, as well as the State Fire Marshall. Upshaw praised the Elamville, Clio, Louisville and Ariton volunteer fire departments, who responded so quickly to the scene and were able to knock the fire down so as to preserve evidence that was located inside the mobile home. Investigators and a Fire Marshall were back on the scene today to process the crime scene. The Fire Marshall ruled the fire an arson.
