BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Center Point has deactivated its red light cameras until the state courts decide whether the courts have jurisdiction to hear defendants' appeals.

In August, Jefferson County District Court Judge David Lichtenstein ruled that the county courts do not have jurisdiction to hear appeals of the traffic camera citations, and he questioned whether the city's administrative review of tickets was legal under the Alabama Constitution of 1901.

The city has asked the judge to vacate the order or move the appeals process to another court. Until Lichtenstein rules on that motion, the city has deactivated the cameras, Mayor Tom Henderson said.

The mayor said that the city did not turn off the cameras because of the recent city elections.
