The Dothan Police Department is pleased to announce the spring 2015 session of the Citizens Observer Program. The Program is an exciting 5-week program hosted by the Dothan Police Department which is intended for citizens interested in learning more about the Dothan Police Department and what it is like to be a Dothan police officer.

Offered FREE of charge, this hands-on, interactive behind-the-scenes program is taught by experienced police officers, who share their unique perspective on law enforcement. The program features an opportunity to ride along with a police officer on shift and covers the following range of topics:

·         Crime scene and criminal investigation

·         Drug and alcohol awareness

·         Traffic crash and enforcement

·         Officer Safety and use of force

·         Constitutional law and legal issues

·         Tools and equipment

·         Special weapons and tactics

·         Bomb explosive detail

·         K9 operations

The purpose of the Citizens’ Observer Program is to open the Dothan Police Department up to the public allowing participants to see exactly what we do and how we do it. Many myths of how law enforcement operates are perpetuated in popular culture – this program provides a realistic view of law enforcement equipping participants with the ability to better assess public safety issues and share with others their first-hand knowledge of law enforcement policies and practices.

The initial class will begin March 31st at 6:30 pm and will be held at the Dothan Police Department. The remaining classes will be held each Tuesday in April from 6 to 8 PM at the Dothan Police Department Community Services building located at 620 Sixth Avenue. The program is open to adults 19-years-old or older or to youth 16-years-old or older with parental consent. The classes are limited to 25 participants. Applications are available at the police department front desk or online by visiting our Community Service section on the city’s website (www.dothan.org).

Completed applications may be faxed to (334) 615-3609 or mailed/delivered in person to the Dothan Police Department Records Division at 210 North Saint Andrews Street, Dothan, Alabama 36303. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and those that are not able to attend this session will be contacted when a future session is scheduled.
