This afternoon the Mayor of Columbia Sandra Lovett held a press conference to talk about the recent audit that was done by the Southeast Alabama Highway Safety Office. Mayor Lovett stated that the lack of documentation was one of the problems and because of this the request for reimbursement of $3,790.93 would need to be paid in full.
There is no secrete that a problem has been brewing for months between the Mayor and the Chief of Police. The Mayor stated the press conference was at the recommendation of the County Atty. Gary Sheara When we spoke to Chief Floyd he stated that the paperwork was in the filing cabinet when he was placed on suspension and was not there when the audit came.
Chief Floyd also stated that while he was on administrative leave for three weeks that the Mayor without the knowledge of the town council had the locks changed to the police department and for several days the only officer left to work could not access the building. When the officer was allowed to get access to the building he noticed some disarray in the office. File had been gone through and missed filed.
When Chief Floyd returned to work he noticed the files were missing and called Project Director Greg Adams and told him of the missing files and Mr. Adams told Chief Floyd how to fix the problem so the town would not have to repay the full amount.
