HOUSTON COUNTY: Today a Houston County Jury returned a guilty verdict against 35 year old Darryl Matthew Gumm. The guilty verdict was on the offenses of Unlawful Manufacturing of a Controlled Substance and Trafficking In Methamphetamine. Both are Class A felonies which carry a sentence of a minimum of ten years and a maximum of life.
The jury trial was before Houston County Circuit Court Judge Butch Binford.
Following the guilty verdict Judge Binford ordered Gumm returned to the Houston County Jail pending a September 26 sentencing date. Judge Binford directed the Alabama Board of Pardons and Parole Officers to conduct a pre-sentence investigation into Gumms.
Gumms was the subject of a week long man hunt. His ankle monitor was tracked by Assistant Jail Commander James Brazier where it was found shot. Many officers of Houston County Sheriff Department, to include Deputy Rick Clemmons and Sheriff Andy Hughes, tracked Gumms attempting to apprehend.
On a routine traffic stop Alabama State Trooper Tim Suggs pulled Gumms over on a stolen pickup truck on the Webb to Kinsey Road. Gumms fled on foot. That resulted in a massive manhunt of multiple agencies on both land and in the air. The next day Gumms was arrested and booked into the Houston County Jail. He has remained in the jail until trial and will until sentencing.
The original cases were made by the Vice Division of Houston County Sheriff Department.
