ETOWAH COUNTY:     A LITTLE HISTORY ABOUT CORONER  - In Alabama the Coroner can arrest the Sheriff of the county. Any civil process to be served on the Sheriff, the Clerk of Court notifies the Coroner and he serves the Sheriff that civil process.

In the event the Sheriff of the county dies or suddenly becomes where he can not serve as Sheriff, the Coroner is automatically the Sheriff unless there is a Supernumery Sheriff

In Houston County, Lamar " Birddog " Hadden was a Supernumary Sheriff. In Dale County Bryant Mixon is Supernumary Sheriff, in Geneva County Greg Ward is Supernumary Sheriff.

Years go in Henry County Sheriff Welcher died of cancer while Sheriff. The Henry County Coroner, Norman Holman immediately became Sheriff. At the time the Governor of Alabama was Guy Hunt. There was an election going on for Sheriff and it was between Lawton Ed Armstrong and James Golden.

To be fair in the election Governor Hunt appointed the Coroner, Norman Holman, to fill the unexpired term of Henry County Sheriff. For about six months or so Holman served as Sheriff and as Corner. FUNNY - Norman loved it and even though the election was decided in November that Lawton Ed Armstrong would take over the reigns of Sheriff for the next term, Norman stayed until the term was over!!!

ETOWAH COUNTY ALABAMA

But last night in Etowah County, the Coroner has found out the Sheriff can arrest him!

Etowah County Coroner Michael Head is facing felony charges after a search warrant was executed on his Gadsden home by drug enforcement agents.

NOTE:   I was elected as Houston County Coroner in 1982 at age 21. Telling how old I am now, George Wallace was elected as Governor. Bragging - a field of four candidates and I got more votes than anyone in any office in Houston County. There were 10,000 votes separating me from my nearest of the four opponents.

What is funny, I was elected at 21 years of age.  During my four year term of office I handled 1134 deaths. And the salary of the Coroner was $ 100 a month with $ 400 a month.

But today, Alabama Legislature changed the laws, to be a Coroner, the person must be t least 25 years of age. But to be a Sheriff, the person must be at least 18 years of age.

Makes sense?
