MONTGOMERY (WSFA) A Montgomery police officer died Saturday morning after a crash between his patrol vehicle and an 18-wheeler in south Montgomery.
The crash happened shortly after 6 a.m. at the intersection of Narrow Lane Road and East South Boulevard.
Montgomery Police Chief Ernest Finley said 24-year-old David Lee Colley was responding to a call at the time of the crash. Colley was transported to Baptist Medical Center South where he died a short time later.
Video and pictures from the scene show the 18-wheeler collided with the driver's side of Colley's patrol car, but officials haven't said exactly how the accident happened. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the crash.
Colley had been on the force two years and leaves behind a wife and a 1-year-old child. Finley said the police department and family need everyone's support and prayers during this difficult time.
Montgomery's Department of Public Safety quickly mobilized a support system for Colley's fellow officers and family Saturday.
Administrators say it's a priority to help police deal with this grief in the most healthy way possible as they continue to protect the city and comfort Colley's family.
Officers have also been assigned to the family to ensure all their needs are met and they aren't grieving alone. Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange was out of town Saturday but released the following statement:
My fellow Montgomerians, I ask for your prayers today for the family of one of MPD's finest, Officer David Colley, who we lost this morning in a tragic traffic accident. The MPD family and our entire city share the burden of grief with Mrs. Colley, their daughter, and the Colley family. We ask for God's healing hand on the Colleys, our brothers and sisters who wear the badge every day, and this great city of ours. I am sure Officer Colley has heard these beautiful words today, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
Officer Colley, you will be missed.
