Dale County Sheriff Investigates Firearm Discharge

On Monday April 11^th Dale County Deputies were dispatched to the Ariton sports complex on Claybank Ave in reference to a firearm being discharged. During the investigation deputies discovered that a parent of one of the players was openly carrying a pistol inside the complex. Other parents and bystanders called the parent’s attention to the sign prohibiting firearms in the complex. The parent removed the weapon from his hip and allegedly placed it in his wife’s purse. A short time later the suspect’s 2 year old child discharged the weapon while playing with the contents inside the purse. The round is believed to have entered the ground a short distance away from the area where it was discharged. Deputies have seized the weapon and are consulting with the District Attorney’s Office on whether charges will be filed. This is an ongoing investigation and anyone with information is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office.
