DOTHAN: The Wiregrass Museum of Art (WMA) announces the opening of Real Lives: Observations and Reflections by Dale Kennington during Art After Hours on Thursday, July 16, at 5:30 p.m. This traveling exhibition, organized by the Friends of the Mennello Museum of American Art in Orlando, Florida, presents Kennington’s masterful grasp of the post-modern aesthetic through her paintings depicting scenes of everyday life.

"We’re very honored to bring this work to Dothan and to showcase a local treasure," says Dana-Marie Lemmer, Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the WMA.  "Kennington’s representation of everyday moments is exceptional and allows viewers to connect with her work on very personal levels.

Born in Savannah, Georgia, Kennington has spent most of her life in Dothan, Alabama, and is a graduate of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. As a stay-at-home mom, she continued to study art and began painting portraits of her children. Kennington made the transition to studio artist in the 1980s and has become well known for her Realist style of painting, using her own photographs to compose her works. She is inspired by her travels to Paris and throughout the United States, recording scenes of people engaged in ordinary activities - riding on the subway, sitting in a cafe, mingling at a cocktail party.

Kennington has received numerous awards for her work, including recognition by the Alabama State Council on the Arts in 2009, an Alabama Governor’s Arts Awards and designation as one of Alabama’s "Master Artists" by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel. Her works are found in private collections and museums across the nation including the Butler Institute of American Art, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the Mobile Museum of Art and the personal collection of King Carl Gustaf XVI of Sweden.

Kennington will give an artist lecture on August 20 at 6 p.m. at the Wiregrass Museum of Art. It is free and open to the public.

Real Lives: Observations and Reflections is presented by Mike Schmitz and Family with generous support from the Friends of Dale Kennington.

Admission to Art After Hours is free for museum members and $5 for the general public. Please join us.
